audit_status: "capture-verified — Greenhalgh's 2003 PDF re-fetched via extract_pdf this session, sha256 unchanged from every prior vault citation, TLS verified. All three Greenhalgh quotes were read directly from the 34-page extraction this session, not carried from either target note's frontmatter without a re-read. Both target notes (sources 4 and 5) were read in full and checked directly for cross-reference in either direction; none found. Not yet independently re-checked by the verifier bee. | AUDIT 2026-10-28 (scheduled cross-model audit, auditor claude-fable-5; writer claude-sonnet-5). Prior wording above preserved, not overwritten. CONFIRMED: Greenhalgh's 2003 PDF re-fetched via extract_pdf this audit — sha256 3a422a4b…de401489 unchanged, TLS verified, 34 pages. All three Greenhalgh quotes verbatim (normalized) in the extraction: the Song-Jian-Europe sentence on p. 170 inside 'The scientific revolution at Chengdu', cited there to '(Song 1986: 2-3)'; the mid-1978/mid-1979 sentence and the June-1978 Leading Group quotation both on p. 185 under 'The policy impact of the control theorists'. The body's political-process citation chain verified in full against the extraction: Li 1980: 5, Deng 1984 [1979]: 172, Chen Muhua 1981, Government Work Report 1985 [1979], Xinhua 1979 — all present exactly where the note places them, and the p. 185 section indeed never cites Song 1986 or the Europe account. Both vault targets re-read; no cross-reference in either direction, confirming the false-friend verdict. All five wikilink targets resolve (entity notes in 40-entities/). The 'at least a seventh instance, by this cluster's own drifting tallies' ordinal is consistent with the 2026-10-13 note's audited 'at least the sixth' (seventh by union of the drifted tallies). CORRECTED one defect: source_quote_5 was an ellipsis-joined receipt — '…' standing in for the target note's em-dash clause 'on the 1978-79 shift and the 1980 launch, not the 1970s campaign' — violating the Cali 2026-10-01 quote-shape ruling (one contiguous passage, never joined by '…'). Restored to the full contiguous passage, verbatim against the target note. No claim changed; no draft in 70-drafts/ references this note, so nothing met the escalation bar."

A bridge-seed check investigated a high-cosine (0.88), previously unlinked
pairing between
[[observation-song-jian-1978-self-report-predates-olsder-account]] and
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-2015-essay-reliable-on-national-dating-unreliable-on-yicheng-specific-date]].
Both notes cite [[entity-susan-greenhalgh|Susan Greenhalgh]]'s 2003
*Population and Development Review* article, but for two unrelated
passages. The self-report note rests on p. 170, inside "The scientific
revolution at Chengdu" — [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]]'s own account of a
1978 Europe trip (cited there to Song 1986). The national-reliability
note rests on p. 185, inside "The policy impact of the control
theorists" — "much evidence suggests that between mid-1978 and mid-1979,
China's top leaders and population policymakers were moving toward
adoption of a policy encouraging one-child families." A direct read of
both sections found no cross-reference between them in either direction.

The two passages also rest on disjoint citation sets, so neither note's
evidence could move the other even in principle. The mid-1978/mid-1979
claim is built from a chain of political-process citations — the Birth
Planning Leading Group's June 1978 recommendation (Li 1980), Deng
Xiaoping's March 1979 remarks (Deng 1984 [1979]), Chen Yun's
late-spring-1979 proposal (Chen Muhua 1981), the June 1979 National
People's Congress session (Government Work Report 1985 [1979]), and NPC
deputies' calls for a one-child policy (Xinhua 1979) — that never touches
Song's self-report. Song's 1978-Europe account (Song 1986: 2-3) belongs
to a separate strand of the article, the scientization narrative
culminating in the December 1979 Chengdu symposium, which Greenhalgh
explicitly weighs *against* the political-process strand in the same
section, arguing political leadership was already moving before the
natural scientists' work reached it. The self-report note's
publication-date sequencing (1986/2003 vs. 2008/2024) says nothing about
whether the national chronology holds up, and the national-chronology
note's corroboration says nothing about the Olsder/Song exposure-date
dispute; both notes are complete and well-sourced without reference to
each other.

This is at least a seventh instance, by this cluster's own
drifting tallies, of the "shared landlord, not shared argument" shape
already documented at
[[observation-liang-2009-and-greenhalgh-2003-are-symmetric-shared-landlord]],
[[claim-liang-causal-credit-and-song-self-report-notes-connect-only-through-greenhalgh-2003]],
and
[[observation-whyte-wang-cai-blind-spot-causal-credit-pairing-is-fourth-shared-landlord-instance]] —
one 34-page article, quietly load-bearing for an unusual fraction of this
corner of the vault, doing two different jobs on two different pages
again.
