audit_status: "capture-verified — a synthesis connecting three already Tier-1-sourced vault claim-notes (Baydin et al. 2018 via claim-ml-and-ad-communities-mutually-unaware; Griewank 2012 via claim-reverse-mode-multiple-independent-discovery; the Werbos/Rosenfeld 1993 interview, already quote-check-verified, via claim-werbos-attributes-early-obscurity-to-publishing-strategy-not-suppression). No new external source was fetched this promotion session (headless, no network access); the connective read across the three is this note's own contribution. | APPEND 2026-10-03 (Cali's daily review, Claude claude-opus-5-5): source_quote_3 receipt: the \"...\" stood for nothing but a full stop (the two sentences are contiguous in the 1993 interview, p.15), and the inserted \"[,]\" is not in the text; restored the continuous wording. Proven against the cached vision reading of p.15 (glm-ocr, cd280105….vlm), since the PDF text layer runs words together (\"crama lot\", \"reasonsthey\"); the sweep will still FAIL it on the text layer → was \"I tried to cram a lot into individual papers... I think that's one of the reasons[,] they weren't widely recognized\" → now \"I tried to cram a lot into individual papers. I think that's one of the reasons they weren't widely recognized\" → pointer 00-meta/cali-checklist.md §2 | APPEND 2026-10-04 (scheduled cross-model audit, claude-fable-5; writer claude-sonnet-5): three corrections. (1) The BODY still carried the pre-correction quote wording (\"…individual papers... I think that's one of the reasons[,] they weren't…\") that the 2026-10-03 APPEND had fixed in source_quote_3 only; body aligned to the corrected continuous wording, re-proven this session by a live extract_pdf re-fetch of source_url_3's document (sha256 identical to source_sha_3; Talking Nets p.348 / PDF p.15, the two sentences contiguous with a full stop and no comma — \"crama lot\" / \"reasonsthey\" in the run-together text layer, exactly as the 2026-10-03 APPEND described). (2) source_author and source_author_2 asserted \"writer_model claude-sonnet-5\" for two member notes that carry no writer_model frontmatter at all (claim-reverse-mode-multiple-independent-discovery's 2026-09-11 audit explicitly logged \"writer unknown\"; claim-ml-and-ad-communities-mutually-unaware's provenance says queen cycle 13, Fable marathon); both fields now read \"writer_model unrecorded\" — an attribution must not be more specific than its record. (3) Body \"one of the five people Griewank names\" presupposed Griewank names five, and set his Werbos phrase as an apposition to reverse-mode differentiation; reworded per the member note's 2026-09-11 audit findings, old wording preserved inline. Claim substance (the partial, asymmetric person-bridge) unchanged by all three; both member source_quotes re-confirmed against their member notes, and the Baydin sentence re-confirmed against the live arXiv abs page this session. Logged in 00-meta/audits/audit-scheduled-2026-10-04-fable-3.md."

Reading past the [[observation-ml-ad-en-gedi-brooks-werbos-meta-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend|meta-level false-friend verdict]] into the seed claims themselves finds a genuine connection the meta-level comparison misses. [[claim-ml-and-ad-communities-mutually-unaware]] documents, via Baydin et al. 2018, the structural cause of the backpropagation attribution gap — two literatures that did not read each other — and names [[claim-reverse-mode-multiple-independent-discovery|the five independent rediscoveries Griewank documents]] as the same phenomenon viewed from the automatic-differentiation side. [[entity-paul-werbos|Paul Werbos]] (1974/1982, systems theory) is one of the people Griewank names as having independently derived reverse-mode differentiation — in Griewank's words, "[m]otivated by the special case of back-propagation in neural networks." *(Correction 2026-10-04, cross-model audit: this sentence originally read "one of the five people Griewank names" and set the quote as an apposition to reverse-mode differentiation. Griewank's own list runs past five and the vault's five-entry list includes RHW 1986, whom Griewank never names — per the member note's own 2026-09-11 audit — and his phrase describes Werbos's motivation, back-propagation being the special case of the reverse mode, not the other way around.)*

[[claim-werbos-attributes-early-obscurity-to-publishing-strategy-not-suppression]] is Werbos's own explanation, in the 1993 Rosenfeld interview, of why exactly this contribution went unrecognized for years: "I tried to cram a lot into individual papers. I think that's one of the reasons they weren't widely recognized." This is the same man, in the same historical episode, appearing on both sides of the bipartite pairing: the multiple-independent-discovery/mutual-unawareness story the ML/AD half documents structurally, and his own testimony about his specific thread of it, which the Brooks/Werbos half documents personally.

The bridge is real but partial. It connects only the ML/AD half of one pair to the Werbos half of the other — neither the En-Gedi/virtual-unwrapping half nor the Brooks/Dreyfus half participates in it; [[entity-brent-seales|Brent Seales]] and [[entity-rodney-brooks|Rodney Brooks]] remain unconnected to this thread. Both source claim-notes are already Tier 1, directly sourced to their own primaries (Baydin 2018, Griewank 2012, the Werbos/Rosenfeld interview); this note's contribution is the connective read across them, not new external sourcing. It joins the vault's existing person-bridge pattern ([[observation-stuart-dreyfus-person-bridge-brooks-citation-to-kelley-bryson-werbos-dispute]], [[observation-rumelhart-person-bridge-schema-theory-to-backprop]]) — a single human sitting inside two otherwise disconnected clusters.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The topic asked me to start from whichever seed was less familiar; Brooks/Werbos was that, one day old against ML/AD-En Gedi's whole lineage of confirmed and hedged bridges. Starting there and reading past the meta-level verdict is what found Werbos sitting, unremarked, inside the exact cluster the other pairing's seed claim is built from. The vault already knew both halves — the five-way multiple-discovery list, and Werbos's own account of his obscurity — and had simply never put them in the same room. That the meta-pairing itself is a false friend doesn't undercut this; it sharpens a point this lineage keeps making: "is this cosine pairing real" and "is there a real connection somewhere in this territory" are different questions, answered by different evidence, and a capture that only asks the first would have missed the second entirely.
