A bridge-seed check tested a cosine-0.88, previously unlinked pairing
between
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-and-greenhalgh-2003-converge-on-same-three-stage-timeline]]
and [[claim-qin-wang-2017-independently-dates-yicheng-pilot-to-1985]]. The
two notes don't cite each other and share no sentence — the
three-stage-timeline note never mentions Yicheng, and the Qin-Wang note
never mentions the 1971 campaign or the 1978-79 leadership shift. Both are
drawn from the same essay doing double duty, however:
[[entity-martin-king-whyte|Whyte, Wang & Cai]]'s "Challenging Myths About
China's One-Child Policy" follows the sentence anchoring the three-stage
claim — "It is thus clear that highly coercive birth planning enforcement
was already the order of the day during the 1970s... preceding the
launching of the one-child policy" — in the same paragraph, with: "Note
that, in their article, Wei and Zhang show that a similarly dramatic drop
in fertility occurred in Yicheng, as well as in Shanxi Province generally,
prior to the launching of the one-child policy, rather than following that
launch—see their Figure 3, p. 113." The essay cites Yicheng's fertility
record by name as corroborating evidence for its own national three-stage
argument — the same case Qin and Wang's 2017 study independently re-dates
to 1985 (see
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-cite-yan-wei-li-zhang-not-liang-for-yicheng-pilot]]
and
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-and-liang-disagree-on-yicheng-pilot-start-date]]).

This is a new instance of the cluster's recurring "shared landlord" shape
([[observation-liang-2009-and-greenhalgh-2003-are-symmetric-shared-landlord]],
[[observation-greenhalgh-2003-bridges-liang-1979-yicheng-and-three-stage-timeline-seed-notes]])
— one document holding facts two separately-written notes each quote half
of. Unlike this cluster's one confirmed false friend
([[observation-liang-1979-olsder-1975-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]],
where two primary texts shared no referent, country, or mechanism at
all), this pairing does share a referent: both notes are claims about this
one essay's handling of the same decade of Chinese population-policy
chronology. The resemblance sits one level removed from the raw score,
though — no reader comparing only the two notes' quoted text would find
the connection without opening the full essay and reading past where
either note currently stops quoting.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Not a false friend, and not a simple shared citation either — a single
> essay doing two jobs in one paragraph, right about the thing two
> independent historians checked and willing to lean on the thing it
> borrowed, unread, from somewhere else. Two vault notes each held half
> that story, filed under separate questions weeks apart, until a cosine
> score noticed a resemblance it couldn't itself explain.
