title: "Do Margaret Boden's Mind as Machine (2006) or Anderson & Rosenfeld's Talking Nets (1998) combine Dreyfus & Dreyfus's 1988 'vindicated, not refuted' account with Olazaran's 1993 SRI-funding account against 'Perceptrons killed connectionism'?"

[[observation-dreyfus-olazaran-combined-framing-not-found-in-published-ai-history-literature]]
concludes — on convergent negative evidence from five sources checked directly
(Olazaran's own chapter, Nilsson 2009, Yuxi Liu 2024, Berkeley 1997 and 2019)
— that no published history-of-AI source yet checked runs
[[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Dreyfus]] and [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart Dreyfus]]'s
1988 "never really refuted" framing alongside
[[entity-mikel-olazaran|Olazaran]]'s 1993 SRI-interview funding account as
joint evidence against "*Perceptrons* killed connectionism." That conclusion
rests partly on an unprovable universal negative, but two concrete,
unread candidates were identified and not checked this session:

- Margaret Boden's *Mind as Machine: A History of Cognitive Science* (2006) —
named by several of the session's search hits as a standard, detailed
  secondary history of the controversy.
- James A. Anderson and Edward Rosenfeld's *Talking Nets: An Oral History of
Neural Networks* (MIT Press, 1998) — interviews with connectionists
(Widrow, Cowan, Hecht-Nielsen) discussing the perceptron controversy's
causes; a plausible place for the two threads to run side by side given its
oral-history format. Excerpted secondhand inside Yuxi Liu's 2024 essay
already read, but not read directly.

**What would answer this:** a direct read of the relevant chapters of either
book (library/archive access permitting — Boden's book is not known to be
openly mirrored; a `Talking Nets` interview excerpt or review covering the
perceptron-controversy chapters would narrow the question even without the
full book) checked specifically for whether it cites both Dreyfus 1988's
"vindicated" framing and Olazaran's SRI-funding account in the same
argument. A positive hit would mean the vault's pairing in
[[observation-dreyfus-olazaran-converge-connectionism-eclipse-was-social]] is
not novel; a continued negative strengthens (without proving) the "vault's
own synthesis" reading.

Also unread, lower priority: the &&&-journal essay "Kernelled Connections:
Perceptron as Diagram" (tripleampersand.org), checked only via recon this
session, which cites Olazaran's "modes of articulation" framework but gave
no recon indication of combining the two accounts.

## Progress

- 2026-10-17 (promotion of `10-inbox/raw/2026-10-06-do-margaret-bodens-mind-as-machine-2006-or.md`):
**Partial — still open; neither book read directly.** Both candidate
books' access routes were blocked this session: Boden's *Mind as Machine*
vol. 2 is held on the Internet Archive as item `mindasmachinehis0002bode`
but marked `Access-restricted-item: true` ("Print Disabled") and its
search-inside API returned HTTP 403 on every query (incl. "Olazaran",
"Dreyfus"); the Brown Digital Repository's "Talking Nets Archive" item
pages (the unedited interview transcripts, `bdr:788xxx` range) returned
  only a bot-check / cookie-verification screen, never transcript content.
No Google Books snippet, ToC page, or review (Harman's *American
Scientist*; Chomsky's 2007 symposium piece) surfaced any passage from
either book on the Dreyfus/Olazaran question. (These are document-metadata
and access-route facts, logged here per promote §5a rather than as a
claim-note.) A controlled-digital-lending borrow of the IA item, or a
logged-in Brown session, would resolve this directly; not attempted (no
  login route).
- 2026-10-17: **One new negative data point found, at one remove.** The &&&
essay (now read directly, not just recon) cites both candidate books *and*
Olazaran's sociology side by side and still never invokes Dreyfus — recorded
  as [[claim-eby-2020-kernelled-connections-cites-boden-olazaran-not-dreyfus]],
  a sixth independent source for
  [[observation-dreyfus-olazaran-combined-framing-not-found-in-published-ai-history-literature]].
Does not close this question: it says nothing about the books' full texts
beyond the pages Eby happened to cite.
- 2026-10-17: **Lead** — the Olazaran treatment Eby actually cites is the 1996
*Social Studies of Science* article "A Sociological Study of the Official
History of the Perceptrons Controversy" (26(3): 611–59), not the 1993
*Advances in Computers* chapter the rest of this vault's thread uses. Worth
checking directly whether the 1996 article — apparently Olazaran's more
widely cited treatment — runs any closer to the Dreyfus framing than the
  1993 chapter does.
