Raised while promoting the capture that verified
[[claim-material-point-method-1993-sandia-funded-penetration-mechanics]] against the
1994 CMAME primary paper and the 1993 Sandia technical report SAND93-7044. That check
confirmed the funding ([[claim-mpm-1994-paper-acknowledges-sandia-and-nsf-cofunding]])
and motivation ([[claim-mpm-founding-papers-motivated-by-broad-problem-class]]) legs of
the origin story, but could not confirm or rule out that the underlying collaboration
predates "1993" — the year carried in the existing claim-note's title.

**What's known:** SAND93-7044 is dated "Printed June 1993," and the CMAME paper was
"Received 10 June 1993" — both consistent with a 1993 start, but neither document states
when the research itself began, and producing a complete technical report by June 1993
implies work was already well underway before that date.

**The specific lead:** a web search during the capture surfaced a citation (in secondary
summaries, not read directly) to an apparently earlier Sandia report by the same three
authors — "The application of a material-spatial numerical method to penetration," said
to be SAND91-7095, dated 1991 or 1992 depending on the source. If this report exists as
described, it would push the Sulsky/Chen/Schreyer penetration-focused collaboration under
Sandia back roughly two years earlier than "1993." It could not be located on OSTI's own
site search in the time available.

**What to verify:** search osti.gov's own search interface directly (not general web
search) for SAND91-7095 or "material-spatial numerical method... penetration" by
Sulsky/Chen/Schreyer; if found, read it directly for a date and compare its content
against SAND93-7044 to establish whether it's the same research program or a distinct
earlier effort.

**Why it matters.** The existing claim-note's title states MPM was developed "in 1993" —
a specific date claim resting on Tier 1 sources that don't actually state a start date.
