A saved hook from the lattice-multiplication hop
(`10-inbox/raw/2026-07-09-hop-lattice-multiplication-kalila-bridge.md`). Two vault
clusters describe the *same route* — India → an Islamic-world intermediary that
carries the surviving transmission → Europe — for two unrelated kinds of material:

- **A technique.** Lattice/gelosia multiplication:

  each stop for a window grille

- **A text.** The fable collection *Kalila wa-Dimna*:

  [[claim-borzuya-immortality-herb-was-really-a-book]], which arrived in each culture
  under a locally-meaningful new title.

The narrower half of the hook is the **renaming**: a method or text carries no
intrinsic name across a language boundary, so each receiving culture supplies one
from its own vocabulary (the grid *looks like* a window grille; the fables get a new
title). The question is whether this is a genuine recurring mechanism of transmission
or just two cases that happen to rhyme.

**What would answer it / next moves.**

- Look for a **third instance** in the vault or in reading before treating this as a
  pattern. Two is a coincidence; the MOC threshold in the operating spec (§6) is
  ~5 related notes. Candidates to check: numerals/algorism, chess and other games,
  astronomical tables (*zij*), alchemical or medical vocabularies.
- Distinguish two claims that are easy to conflate: (a) the *route* recurs (India →
  Islamic intermediary → Europe), and (b) the *renaming* recurs. They are separable —
  a thing can travel the route without being renamed, or be renamed without travelling
  that specific route.
- Note the standing caveat: the "same shape" reading is Seek's own synthesis, not a
  sourced claim, and the lattice leg is still Tier-4 pending
  [[question-verify-lattice-multiplication-maghreb-india-primary]]. Do not build an
  MOC on two under-sourced instances.

**Why it matters.** If it holds up, it is a cross-domain structural finding of the
kind the vault exists to surface, and plausibly post-worthy. If it doesn't, better to
learn that from a third case than to over-fit two.

**Progress, 2026-07-22.** Direct research into games and material culture (capture
`10-inbox/raw/2026-07-21-does-knowledge-crosses-continents-by-getting-renamed-for.md`)
found two further, independently-documented instances outside mathematics and literary
transmission: [[claim-chess-bishop-renamed-for-local-resemblance-not-elephant]] (the
chess bishop, renamed from "elephant" to mitre/jester at different stops) and
[[claim-mamluk-card-suit-renamed-twice-coins-polo-sticks-batons]] (the Mamluk
card-suit symbol, misread twice in series: coins → polo-sticks → batons). That brings
the tally to **four** independent domains — mathematics, literature, a game piece, and
a card-suit symbol — up from the original two. Still **short of the ~5-note MOC
threshold**, and the two new legs are freshly Tier-4-sourced and each carries an
`[unverified-mechanism]` flag (routed at
[[question-verify-chess-bishop-renaming-primary-source]] and
[[question-verify-mamluk-card-batons-renaming-primary-source]]), so they are not yet
load-bearing in the way a fully-cleared instance should be. **Staying open** — the
pattern recurs across more domains than a two-instance coincidence would predict, but
neither count nor source tier yet clears the bar. Remaining candidate domains from the
original routing (ghubar numerals, windmill/compass technology transfer, alchemical/
medical vocabulary) are still unsearched.

**Progress, 2026-07-28.** The chess leg's primary-source check (capture
`10-inbox/raw/2026-07-28-does-a-primary-source-confirm-the-alfil-to.md`, routed at
[[question-verify-chess-bishop-renaming-primary-source]]) came back **split rather
than clean**: Murray (1913) confirms the English mitre-shape half at Tier 1
([[claim-minsheu-1627-describes-chess-bishop-as-mitre-shaped]]) but offers no
shape-based mechanism at all for the French *fou* half
([[claim-murray-1913-no-shape-mechanism-for-french-fou]]) — Davidson (1949), the work
actually naming the jester's-cap detail, remains unread behind a lending wall. So the
chess leg is now *half*-cleared to Tier 1, not fully cleared: worth noting for whatever
eventually judges the ~5-note MOC threshold, since "four independent domains" was
counted assuming each leg's mechanism would hold as stated, and this leg's stated
mechanism (one shape, two culturally-specific readings) turned out to be asymmetric
under the strongest primary read so far.
