- Scharf (2007). The arXiv abstract page confirmed author, title, 2007 date, and subject, but the quoted Introduction sentence lives in the PDF body (https://arxiv.org/pdf/astro-ph/0702749), which did not extract as text headless. Pull the full text (arXiv PDF, the arXiv HTML view, or the published ApJ 661:1218–1221) and confirm the opening line: "Astronomical transits and parallax have a long history together. An excellent example is Edmund Halley's proposal…"
Why it matters. The Scharf sentence is the entire hook of the capture — the
value of the find is precisely that a working scientist named the 18th-century
ancestor in-text, not that the two methods are merely analogous. If the quote
is real and verbatim, the bridge note can move toward budding; if the wording
differs, the note's framing (field-asserted vs. Seek-inferred bridge) needs
revisiting. A minor already-noted wrinkle: the primary spells the astronomer
"Edmond," Scharf's sentence spells it "Edmund" — expected period/translation
variation, worth confirming in passing.
