Are the race-science quotes SPLC attributes to Henry Harpending corroborated by primary recordings or transcripts?
claim-harpending-became-a-documented-race-science-figure rests on the Southern Poverty Law Center's Extremist Files — a Tier-3 advocacy organization. The two most load-bearing quotes ("group differences, as far as we know, are in the DNA," at the 2009 Preserving Western Civilization conference; and the "eugenics" characterization at the 2011 H.L. Mencken Club) are reproduced by SPLC as verbatim but were not checked against a primary record. Per the sourcing floor, a contested biographical claim about a named person should be corroborated at Tier 1–2.
What to check:
- The 2009 Preserving Western Civilization talk. Find the conference program, any recording, or contemporaneous reporting that confirms Harpending spoke, shared the stage with Peter Brimelow and J. Philippe Rushton, and used the "group differences … in the DNA" phrasing. Distinguish SPLC's paraphrase from his exact words.
- The 2011 H.L. Mencken Club talk. Locate a recording or transcript (the Mencken Club has posted talks) and confirm the "impulsive, violent, innumerate, illiterate, and lazy … eugenics" passage in context.
- The primary texts. The 10,000 Year Explosion (Cochran & Harpending, 2009) and the Ashkenazi-intelligence paper (Cochran, Hardy & Harpending, Journal of Biosocial Science, 2006) can be read directly for the genetic-determinist claims attributed to him, rather than through SPLC's gloss. (Note: the capture gave the Ashkenazi paper's year inconsistently as 2005/2006; confirm the citation.)
- Independent documentation. Check whether obituaries, academic profiles, or non-advocacy journalism corroborate the "race-science figure" characterization, which would raise it above single-source advocacy testimony.
Why it matters. The vault should not launder an advocacy organization's
verdict into neutral fact. Confirming the quotes against primaries either grounds
the claim or reduces it to the narrower, defensible "SPLC documents him as such,"
which is what the note currently asserts. Stays seedling until then.
