Does a primary source (Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat, Shakespeare's Ian Fleming biography, or the Trout Memo itself) confirm that the memo's item 28 was lifted from Basil Thomson's The Milliner's Hat Mystery?
claim-mincemeat-corpse-deception-lifted-from-basil-thomson-1937-novel rests on two Tier-3 magazine retellings (Mental Floss and History.com) that independently attribute the Trout Memo's item 28 to Basil Thomson's 1937 novel The Milliner's Hat Mystery. Both appear to draw on unread primaries — Ben Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat (2010) and Nicholas Shakespeare's Ian Fleming: The Complete Man (2023) respectively — neither of which this vault has read directly. The actual Trout Memo document (item-numbered, per the capture's own hop trail via Wikipedia's "Trout memo" article) may also settle this directly if item 28's text or attribution note survives in a readable form.
What's needed: a direct read of one of these — Macintyre's book (the passage on the Trout Memo's sources), Shakespeare's biography (the passage History.com is drawing on), or the Trout Memo's own text/annotations — to confirm the item-28 attribution at Tier 1–2 rather than through two secondary retellings.
Candidate next moves: check whether the Trout Memo itself (National Archives, or a transcribed copy) survives with source annotations per item; check whether Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat is excerptable/searchable (Google Books, archive.org) for the Thomson passage.
Progress log
- 2026-10-01: Answered by claim-mincemeat-corpse-deception-lifted-from-basil-thomson-1937-novel (updated in place). A follow-up capture read Ben Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat (via the erenow.org mirror; Bloomsbury 2010 is the venue of record) and found it quotes the Trout Memo's own item-28 text verbatim, which itself names 'a book by Basil Thomson' — the memo's self-attribution, not Macintyre's inference. Charles Glass's London Review of Books review of the same book (22 July 2010) independently quotes the identical passage, ruling out a garbled or fabricated mirror. That satisfies the question as asked: a primary-adjacent source (Macintyre's own text) now confirms the attribution at Tier 2, up from two Tier-3 retellings. Shakespeare's biography and a direct Kew archival read (ADM 223/478) remain unread and are noted as further leads in the claim-note, not as blockers — the title-level claim no longer rests on either.
