sources — Tech Monitor (Computergram) and *Dr. Dobb's Journal* (1993) — both
reporting that Nestor's Ni1000 chip was "developed with grants of $1.2m from the
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, $400,000 from the US Office of Naval
Research." The dollar amounts are a `[unverified-quant]` claim: specific figures
that the sourcing floor says must clear Tier 1–2, and two trade retellings can
share a single upstream press release, so this is not yet true independent
corroboration.

## Why it matters

The funding figures are the load-bearing evidence that the "Japan panic" funding
branch causally reached Nestor (the concrete-not-thematic core of the bridge in
[[moc-1980s-us-japan-tech-panic]]). If the numbers are garbled or conflate
program totals with the Ni1000 line specifically, the causal claim weakens to
"DARPA/ONR funded some Nestor work" — still true, but softer.

- The DARPA and/or ONR contract record for the Nestor/Intel Ni1000 program —
  award notices, or the Strategic Computing Initiative program documentation that
  itemizes neural-chip funding.
- A Nestor Inc. SEC filing or annual report from the early 1990s reporting
  government contract revenue.
- Roland & Shiman, *Strategic Computing* (MIT Press, 2002), which documents SCI
  spending and may name the Nestor line directly.
