Raised while promoting [[claim-gersick-1991-punctuated-equilibrium-deep-structure]] and
[[claim-tushman-romanelli-1985-reorientation-exogenous-trigger]]. Both notes carry
`[unverified-mechanism — needs primary]`: the quoted phrasings were search-engine-reproduced,
not read from the primary text. Every mirror attempted at capture failed the same way —
publisher pages (AOM, HBS), ResearchGate, Academia.edu, Semantic Scholar, scite.ai, a SAGE
reference encyclopedia, a direct NTNU PDF, and a scanned MIT-hosted PDF all returned 403,
an SSO redirect, connection-refused, or a non-extractable scanned image. The vault's
`extract_pdf` tool errored this session (`pdfinfo` not found — missing dependency).

**What to check (two documents, same verification action):**

1. **Gersick, C.J.G. (1991)**, "Revolutionary Change Theories," *Academy of Management Review*
   16(1):10–36, DOI 10.5465/amr.1991.4278988. Confirm against the primary (esp. ~p. 14): the
   "deep structure" definition — "the set of fundamental 'choices'…" — the phrase "a highly
   durable underlying order," and the two-role description (persists/limits during equilibrium;
   disassembles/reconfigures during revolutionary punctuations).

2. **Tushman, M.L. & Romanelli, E. (1985)**, "Organizational Evolution: A Metamorphosis Model
   of Convergence and Reorientation," *Research in Organizational Behavior* 7:171–222. Confirm
   the convergence/reorientation definitions and, critically, the trigger findings — that small
   changes "did not accumulate," transformations were "rapid and discontinuous," and that
   "major environmental changes and chief executive officer succession influenced transformations."

**How to get in:** a working PDF-extraction path (repair `extract_pdf`/`pdfinfo`), institutional
or JSTOR access, or a paged/split fetch that dodges the size-and-access walls. Until then the
claim-notes resting on unread text stay `status: seedling`. Medium priority — the notes are
cross-domain analogy scaffolding, not load-bearing infrastructure, but Tier-1 mechanism claims
should not stay on search-engine-reproduced quotes indefinitely.

## Update 2026-07-09 (verification pass — partially resolved)

`extract_pdf` worked this session. Full-text mirrors of **Gersick (1991)** and of **Romanelli &
Tushman (1994)** were obtained and read directly. Outcomes (see promotion of
`10-inbox/raw/2026-07-09-do-the-primary-texts-of-gersick-1991-and.md`):

1. **Gersick (1991) — CONFIRMED.** The "deep structure" definition, the "highly durable
   underlying order" phrase, and the two-role description all resolve verbatim (p. 12, p. 14).
   Recorded in [[claim-gersick-1991-deep-structure-quotes-confirmed-verbatim]]. The
   `[unverified-mechanism]` flag on [[claim-gersick-1991-punctuated-equilibrium-deep-structure]]
   is now a candidate for lifting (left to a reviewer; a same-day audit re-affirmed it on
   publisher-access grounds).
2. **Tushman & Romanelli (1985) — NOT confirmed, and two problems surfaced.** (a) The three
   "trigger" findings are the verbatim abstract of *Romanelli & Tushman (1994)*, a different
   later paper — a misattribution ([[claim-punctuated-equilibrium-trigger-findings-belong-to-romanelli-tushman-1994]]).
   (b) The vault's "reorientation" quote is a paraphrase blending two distinct 1985 constructs
   ([[claim-vault-reorientation-quote-blends-two-tushman-romanelli-constructs]]).

**What still remains open:** the **1985 chapter itself** (*Research in Organizational Behavior*
7:171–222) was **not** obtained in full text — no extractable mirror found (NTNU, ResearchGate,
SciSpace, HBS). Everything above about T&R's own 1985 wording rests on Gersick's and R&T-1994's
page-cited verbatim quotations of it, not a direct read. A future session with JSTOR/library
access should retrieve the 1985 chapter directly to (i) confirm the reorientation/convergence
definitions first-hand and (ii) confirm the 1985 chapter's own trigger theory (environmental
jolt + executive succession). The practitioner-facing CMR (1986) "Convergence and Upheaval"
companion (cmr.berkeley.edu, possibly open access) is a candidate alternate route. Question stays
`status: open` for the T&R-1985 portion; the Gersick portion is resolved.
