title: "Confirm against a standalone 1969 first-edition scan of Perceptrons that 'credit-assignment' is absent from the original text (present only in the 1988 Epilogue)"

Raised while promoting [[claim-perceptrons-credit-assignment-only-in-1988-epilogue]].
The finding — that "credit-assignment" appears in *Perceptrons* only in the 1988
Expanded Edition's Epilogue, not the 1969 original — currently rests on **page-count
triangulation** (292pp expanded vs 258pp first edition; the phrase indexes at scan
pp. 316/318, in the Epilogue region) plus the OCR full-text of the 1988 scan. It has
**not** been checked against a direct 1969-vs-1988 diff.

**What to check:** locate a standalone full-text scan of the **1969 MIT Press first
edition** (as opposed to the 1988 Expanded Edition) and confirm "credit-assignment"
does not occur in the 1969 body (chapters 0–13, pp. 1–258). Also worth resolving: a
web-search synthesis asserted a "section 11.7 / Samuel's checkers" credit-assignment
discussion inside the 1969 body, which the primary index does not support — confirm
it's a synthesis artifact (likely conflation with Minsky 1961), not under-indexed
real content.

**Progress (2026-07-09 batch pass).** Bottou's 2017 reprint PDF was successfully
re-extracted; it confirms the book's *structure* — 1969 text = chapters 0–13,
Prologue + Epilogue = 1988 additions — but is only the foreword, so it carries no
searchable 1969 body ([[claim-bottou-2017-foreword-perceptrons-chapters-0-13-are-1969]]).
Jordan Pollack's 1989 peer-reviewed review independently places the credit/blame
argument in the 1988 Prologue (p. xiii) and finds no "credit assignment" in four
sampled 1969-body passages ([[claim-pollack-1989-credit-assignment-in-1988-prologue]]).
Both are Tier-2 corroboration, still not a direct 1969 read. The blocking fact is now
recorded: **no standalone 1969 scan is freely available** — Internet Archive holds
only the 1988 edition (twice), HathiTrust returned 403, Google Books has no full text
([[claim-perceptrons-1969-standalone-scan-not-freely-available]]). Remaining leads:
an IA "Print Disabled" borrow of the two access-restricted 1988 scans to diff the
arabic body (pp. 1–258) against the Prologue/Epilogue; a HathiTrust account; the
unverified Scribd "Minsky1969" upload (account-gated).

Low priority — the retrospective-relabel finding is already Tier-1 for the 1988
occurrence; this closes the "absent from 1969" half to a direct read.
