[[claim-engineered-threshold-is-not-self-organized-criticality]] rests its
whole distinction on two properties of self-organized criticality:

1. SOC reaches criticality **without external tuning of control parameters**
   (unlike an ordinary phase transition, which is tuned to its critical point).
2. **Local thresholds are necessary but not sufficient** for SOC.

Both are currently sourced only to a Tier-3 MIT 8.334 course project (Golyk
2012), which cites — but is not — the primary. Per `sources.md`, a load-bearing
mechanism/definitional claim needs a Tier 1–2 source. Until this is checked,
the claim-note stays at `seedling`.

## Why it matters

The note's payload is a category boundary: an engineered, hand-tuned threshold
(the AI agent-memory triggers in
[[claim-memory-reorg-triggers-are-accumulated-threshold-not-session-onset]])
is *not* SOC precisely because tuning is what SOC forbids. If the primary
literature phrases the "necessary but not sufficient" point differently — or
qualifies the no-tuning claim (some SOC models do have a hidden tuned
parameter, a known critique) — the sharpness of the note's distinction changes.
Confirming it against Bak lets the note leave seedling; complicating it is
itself worth recording.
