title: "Is Zeiss genuinely the sole supplier of ASML's EUV projection optics, and does '80% of all microchips' hold against an independent source?"

[[claim-zeiss-smt-is-sole-supplier-of-euv-optics-behind-most-advanced-chips]]
carries an `[unverified-quant]` flag. The "80 percent of all microchips
worldwide are manufactured with optics from ZEISS and the lithography systems
of its strategic partner ASML" figure — and the framing of Zeiss SMT as the
*sole* optics supplier — both come from Zeiss's own corporate marketing page.
Quantitative claims require Tier 1–2 sourcing, and a self-reported promotional
round number does not clear that floor even though the venue is nominally the
primary firm.

## Why it matters

This is the "single point of failure" leg of the capture's whole arc — the
claim that a foundation-owned optics firm is a chokepoint for advanced
chipmaking. If the exclusivity or the market-share figure is softer than
stated, the monopoly framing weakens accordingly. The note cannot advance past
seedling, and the chokepoint story cannot appear in any draft, until an
independent source confirms both the sole-supplier structure and a credible
share figure.

## What would answer it

- An ASML primary document (annual report, investor presentation, or
technology page) or serious industry analysis confirming that Carl Zeiss SMT
is the sole supplier of EUV projection/illumination optics — and whether that
exclusivity is contractual, structural, or merely de facto.
- An independent estimate (Chris Miller's *Chip War*, a named semiconductor
analyst, SEMI/TechInsights, or IEEE Spectrum) for the share of advanced /
all chips patterned on EUV, to test the "80%" figure and pin down whether it
refers to *all* microchips or only leading-edge logic.
- Clarification of what the Zeiss sentence actually measures (chips touched by
*any* Zeiss optics — including DUV — vs. EUV specifically), since the two give
  very different numbers.

ASML/Zeiss EUV subject, different claim — the moat mechanism rather than the
market share), and against the fab-economics of
