LeCun's own retrospective describes his 1985 algorithm as propagating "virtual target values," not gradients, with no control-theory framing

LeCun's own account dates the rigorous, Lagrangian (duality-adjacent) derivation of backpropagation to his 1988 paper, not the 1985 Cognitiva paper

Does LeCun's 1985 paper actually derive backpropagation via 'duality theory from control theory (Bryson and Ho, 1969)', as Werbos's 2004 patent characterizes it?

Werbos's 2004 'Object Nets' patent names LeCun twice in its body text, contrasting a 1985 'duality theory' derivation with Werbos's own 1974 one
