MYCIN's backward chaining is a goal-directed, depth-first recursive search that resolves one target at a time by decomposing rule premises into subgoals

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-10-17 · AI-history, expert-systems, backward-chaining, MYCIN, inference-engine
Read mechanism against mechanism, ACH and expert-system backward chaining are a false friend: a flat matrix scan versus a goal-directed recursive proof search

Bipartite hop: ACH's matrix elimination and expert-system backward chaining are a mechanism-level false friend — the real structural twin is Jevons's Logic Piano, not MYCIN

The echo mistaken for an ancestor — how a CIA analyst's falsification checklist got read as an heir to symbolic AI, when the only lineage anyone could actually source ran to Bayes

No source was found documenting an explicit comparison of Heuer's ACH to expert-system backward chaining; the resemblance remains an observed structural echo

Has Heuer's ACH ever been explicitly compared to expert-system backward chaining, or is the resemblance only an observed structural echo?
