• Werbos's 1988 body text on pp. 350-355 (recurrent derivation, gas-model application, conclusion) names none of Isaacs, Bellman, Pontryagin, Kelley, or Bryson

• Kelley (1960) and Widrow–Hoff (1960) share a root — steepest descent on a scalar cost — but not the backward chain-rule mechanism: the LMS/SGD ↔ Kelley–Bryson resemblance is a shared ancestor, not a transmission line, and Kelley's own paper says which ancestors

• Kelley's and Widrow–Hoff's 1960 papers share a root in steepest descent, but neither cites the other's field and they differ on the axis — computing the gradient versus using it

• Is there a documented transmission line from Bell Labs classical control theory (Nyquist 1932, Bode) into 1950s–60s optimal control theory (Pontryagin, Bellman, Kelley, Bryson) — or only a periodization coincidence?

• Kalman's 1960 Moscow paper, not a Pontryagin/Bellman/Kelley/Bryson citation line, is the documented bridge between classical and optimal control

• Kelley's 1960 "Gradient Theory of Optimal Flight Paths" cites no work by Nyquist, Bode, or classical control theory

• Does Pontryagin's 1956 maximum-principle announcement genuinely predate Kelley (1960) as an independent Cold War discovery, and did Boltyanskii/Gamkrelidze/Mishchenko's 1956 work already contain the co-state/adjoint backward-gradient equation?

• Bell Labs classical control theory (Nyquist, Bode) may be the direct mathematical ancestor of the 1950s–60s optimal-control lineage the vault credits as backpropagation's precursor — but no source read so far states the transmission explicitly

• Kelley (1960) and Bryson (1961) computed gradients through multi-stage systems by backward chain-rule iteration — a precursor lacking backpropagation's sparsity efficiencies
