What the primary literature (Heusser 1995 and other Tier-1 sources) establishes about how cobalt-60 enters modern steel — and whether the cluster is deep enough for a MOC

capture promoted Tier 1 2026-09-26 · materials, nuclear, cobalt-60, steelmaking, low-background-physics
Maneschg et al. (2008) find manmade cobalt-60 in all 13 stainless-steel batches screened for GERDA, at about 19 mBq/kg, and Heusser is a co-author

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-09-26 · materials, nuclear, cobalt-60, steelmaking, low-background-physics
Does a primary source confirm the mechanism by which post-1945 steelmaking bakes atmospheric fallout radionuclides (e.g. cobalt-60) into steel?

capture promoted Tier 1 2026-08-16 · materials, nuclear, contamination, radiation-detection, verification
Heusser's 1995 foundational low-background-physics review traces steel's cobalt-60 contamination to furnace-lining wear-monitoring gauge sources, not atmospheric fallout

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-08-16 · materials, nuclear, contamination, radiation-detection, low-background-physics
No primary source located confirms atmospheric air/oxygen-blowing entrainment as steel's cobalt-60 contamination pathway; the primary literature instead documents furnace-gauging and scrap-feedstock routes

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-08-16 · materials, nuclear, contamination, radiation-detection, low-background-physics
Zhang et al. (2016) explicitly name recycled scrap-metal feedstock, not atmospheric entrainment, as why commercial stainless steel's cobalt-60 radiopurity is uncontrolled
