MOC: The attribution is not the evidence — documentary source criticism as a domain-general forensic move

Do Sherman Kent's own 1941 Writing History and 1949 Strategic Intelligence cite Langlois, Seignobos, Bernheim, or Mabillon by name?

A shared method is not a shared lineage — Mabillon's document-dating forensics reappears across six unrelated domains to settle authenticity and priority, and where the vault chased the genealogy it found mostly reinvention, with one documented descent

Langlois & Seignobos (1898) name diplomatics as the body of doctrine for authenticating charters, classing it among the auxiliary sciences feeding External Criticism

Diplomatics and the two-axis source model answer the same trust problem with opposite prescriptions — diplomatics discards the reliability axis as its founding fix, where intelligence doctrine and RAG cannot keep it from leaking

Langlois & Seignobos's 1898 External/Internal Criticism split names the same two-axis architecture as the Admiralty Code and RAG, with Mabillon's diplomatics as its authenticity-axis toolkit

Capture: Does a genuine mechanism connect the DOCSUB-postdates-RHW-1986 claim and the McPeters 1990 letter's July-1984 date, or is the cosine-0.84 pairing a false friend?

Werbos's DOCSUB chronology claim and McPeters's 1990-letter dating claim are both unflagged members of the vault's diplomatics cluster — dated-primary-source comparison overruling a received attribution

Gates's 2025 Altair BASIC authentication reasoning is the same evidentiary move Mabillon founded — a genuine, previously unlinked member of the vault's diplomatics cluster

Is there a documentable descent from Mabillon's diplomatics through general historical method (Quellenkritik / Ranke) to modern scientific-priority adjudication — or only a methodological analogy?

capture promoted Tier 1 2026-07-31 · diplomatics, mabillon, historiography, quellenkritik, ranke
Diplomatics joined the 19th-century Rankean historian's toolkit as an auxiliary science — institutional convergence, not proof Ranke's method derived from Mabillon

John Wallis's 1685 history of algebra used Mabillon-style documentary evidence to rule for Harriot over Descartes in a priority dispute
