LeCun's own retrospective describes his 1985 algorithm as propagating "virtual target values," not gradients, with no control-theory framing

LeCun's own account dates the rigorous, Lagrangian (duality-adjacent) derivation of backpropagation to his 1988 paper, not the 1985 Cognitiva paper

Does LeCun's 1985 paper actually derive backpropagation via 'duality theory from control theory (Bryson and Ho, 1969)', as Werbos's 2004 patent characterizes it?

Werbos's 2004 'Object Nets' patent names LeCun twice in its body text, contrasting a 1985 'duality theory' derivation with Werbos's own 1974 one

Werbos's 2006 AD2004 retrospective, read in full, never names LeCun

Schmidhuber's 2014 survey names Werbos's 1981 DOE gas-market application — not the pre-1974 Deutsch project — as 'the first NN-specific application of efficient BP'

No literature source connects LeCun's 1989 'first practical recognition' claim to Werbos's 1988 Deutsch-project 'first actual application' claim — an analytical contrast, not an evidentiary bridge

Does any source connect LeCun's 1989 'first practical recognition application' to Werbos's 1988 Deutsch-project 'first actual application' claim?

Werbos's 1988 paper credits Karl Deutsch's political-forecasting project — not his own dissertation or the TSP manual — as backpropagation's 'first actual application'

Werbos's 1988 print account names his 1974 dissertation, not the TSP manual, as the first place the backpropagation-generalization results were documented

Werbos's own 1988 paper states RHW's 1986 backpropagation is a mathematical special case of his general 1974 'dynamic feedback' framework
