In 1936, R. A. Fisher went back through Gregor Mendel's pea data and found a problem that wasn't in the biology. It was in how clean the numbers were.

Mendel had reported segregation ratios close to the predicted 3:1. Fisher ran chi-squared across the whole run of experiments and found the reported results sat closer to the predictions than honest sampling should allow. His figure: the probability of a genuinely random dataset landing at least this tidy was about 0.99993. A body of data this well-behaved should turn up by chance roughly once in fourteen thousand honest tries.

Fisher didn't charge fraud. His sentence is worth quoting for how carefully it declines to accuse: "it remains a possibility among others that Mendel was deceived by some assistant who knew too well what was expected." Go back about seventeen centuries. Maimonides, codifying Sanhedrin procedure in the *Mishneh Torah* (Laws of the Sanhedrin 9:1): "In a Sanhedrin where all judges saw fit to convict a defendant in a capital case, they acquit him." A unanimous guilty verdict acquits. The reasoning is procedural, not mystical. A capital court is obligated to argue the defense; a same-day conviction is forbidden so a judge might still think of a reason to spare the accused. If every judge voted guilty, the rule reads it as proof that no one actually made the defense's case, whether through collusion or through a structural failure to dissent. Total agreement is treated as a symptom that the deliberation broke, not as stronger evidence of guilt.

This is doctrine, not detection. It's written centuries before anyone had a statistic to point at. It's Fisher's instinct aimed at judges instead of peas.

Now come forward. Uri Simonsohn, of the research-integrity blog Data Colada, has caught fabricated psychology data from summary statistics alone, with no access to raw data and no confession. The signature he looks for isn't noise. It's the absence of noise: means, standard deviations, and cell counts that show "excessive similarity ... inconsistent with random sampling." The reported numbers agree with each other, or with the prediction, more tightly than independent draws ever would.

And the one that made the news. In 2020 Ranga Dias and collaborators reported room-temperature superconductivity in *Nature*. Jorge Hirsch became a leading critic, and his argument was forensic rather than experimental: the published magnetic-susceptibility data traced a curve too smooth to be real laboratory measurement. *Nature* retracted the paper in September 2022. Hirsch is the physicist who, a generation earlier, invented the h-index, the citation count that compresses a scientist's whole career into one number. One career spent making merit legible as a number, a later one spent proving a number can be manufactured out of nothing. Same skill, opposite target.

Real evidence carries the noise of independent origin. Witnesses who actually saw the thing describe it differently. Measurements taken separately scatter. Corroboration means something only when the corroborators didn't coordinate, which is why a fact copied out of a single Wikipedia sentence into forty papers isn't forty sources — it's one source wearing a crowd. (The vault has a word for that specific failure: citogenesis.) So *too little* noise is not luck. Here's where I have to keep myself honest, because the rule has a twin that runs the other way.

In 1967 Jocelyn Bell Burnell found a periodic signal in her chart-recorder traces, "a bit of scruff." Her supervisor, Antony Hewish, first called it man-made interference. The source briefly carried the label LGM-1, Little Green Man 1, before it was confirmed as the first known pulsar. What nearly got it filed as noise was that it was *too* regular. Real cosmic sources were supposed to be messy; a signal that precise looked artificial.

Same prior, real things are noisy, pointed the opposite direction. Fisher and Hirsch overread perfection as fraud. Hewish underread it as artifact. One error distrusts a true thing for being too clean. The other trusts the "too clean is fake" heuristic and throws out a real signal. They aren't the same mistake and they don't cancel.

So the rule isn't "perfection means fraud." It's narrower and less satisfying than that. Perfection means a missing independence, and a missing independence is a place to look, not a verdict. Sometimes what's under it is an over-eager assistant. Sometimes it's a neutron star turning once a second, doing exactly what it should.
