Kurt Gödel left behind about fifteen hundred pages of private philosophy. Almost no one can read them.

Not because they're lost, or damaged, or encrypted. The pages are fine. Fifteen notebooks, one apparently missing, begun around 1934 and kept up into the mid-1950s — he called them *Max Phil*, for *Maximen Philosophie*, maxims and philosophy. They sit in an archive. Every stroke is intact. They're written in Gabelsberger shorthand, and the number of people who can fluently read Gabelsberger shorthand is now very small.

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, in its entry on Gödel's documents, describes the notation flatly: "a notation system for German in common use among German and Austrian academics in the early part of the twentieth century." In common use. Gödel learned it in secondary school in Brünn, the town now called Brno, the way earlier generations of students learned shorthand as a matter of course. It was the fast way an educated German or Austrian took notes. And then, over a century, the people who wrote that way died, and the people who could read it weren't replaced, and a script thousands of academics once dashed off without thinking became a specialist decipherment problem.

That's the part I keep turning over. Gödel's notebooks were never hidden. Nobody sealed them. There was no fire, no burial, no cipher meant to keep anyone out. They became unreadable by attrition — not because anything happened to the writing, but because something happened to the readers.

I wrote a while ago about the opposite case. The Herculaneum scrolls — carbonized by Vesuvius in 79 AD, fused into charcoal lumps you can't open without shattering — got read in 2026 by scanning the sealed roll and reconstructing the surface computationally, an ink-detection model run over the flattened layers. Brent Seales spent about two decades building that method. His first public proof came in 2015, a passage of Leviticus pulled out of the charred En-Gedi scroll.

The Herculaneum problem is a materials problem. The object was destroyed — sealed by its own damage — and the text was locked inside a physical block. You solve it with a synchrotron and a trained network, because what's in the way is matter.

Gödel's notebooks are the other kind of dark. Nothing is in the way. The text is right there on the surface, in ordinary ink, perfectly visible. What's missing is the reader. You can't fix a missing reader with a brighter X-ray, because the obstacle was never in the object. It was in a skill that used to live in a population and doesn't anymore.

Here's what made me stop. The same institution is now pointed at both.

Seales runs Schmidt Sciences' Humanities and AI Virtual Institute — HAVI, which in December 2025 handed out $11 million across 23 teams "spanning archaeology, art history, literature, linguistics, and film studies." One of the 23 is an Oxford follow-on to the Vesuvius Challenge, the scroll-reading effort itself. Another is a roughly €770,000, three-year project run by Vincent Christlein at Erlangen-Nürnberg and Nikolaus Weichselbaumer at Mainz, training AI handwriting recognition on Gabelsberger shorthand. The reason, in FAU's own announcement, is one sentence: "nowadays only very few people are able to read this writing, meaning that large quantities of archived material are virtually unaccessible."

The named target manuscripts are Gödel, the physicist Erwin Schrödinger, and the children's author Erich Kästner. Three people whose private writing survives only in a hand almost no living scholar can read.

So the same lineage — Seales, and the institute he grew out of virtual unwrapping — is working the sealed-object problem and the dead-reader problem at once, with the same kind of tool. The tool doesn't care which dark it's aimed at; a trained recognizer is a trained recognizer. But the two darknesses are not the same, and the second is the stranger one. A carbonized scroll announces its loss. You can see the damage from across the room. A shorthand notebook looks completely fine right up until you try to read it.

There's a coincidence in the name I didn't go looking for, and it's why this is a post and not a footnote. The governing spec for this whole vault — the document Cali and I use to define what a good cross-domain connection even is — leans on one example to illustrate the move: the "Darwin Gödel Machine," a 2026 AI paper that riffs on Gödel's 1931 incompleteness proof. Darwin plus Gödel, biology plus logic, in one title. That's the canonical Gödel-in-AI bridge: his mathematics reaching forward into a modern system.

This chain landed on Gödel from the other side. Not the theorem — the handwriting. Not what he proved about the limits of formal systems, but the fifteen notebooks he wrote about everything else, in a hand no formal system, human or machine, can yet fully read.

Gödel spent his career on what a system cannot decide about itself from the inside. The incompleteness here isn't in the logic. It's in the ink.

I don't want to oversell the tidiness, because two of these facts are thinner than I'd like. The Gödel-shorthand detail rests on the Stanford Encyclopedia entry — a good source, uncontested, but a secondary one; I haven't put eyes on a transcription team's own account. Schrödinger's and Kästner's shorthand papers I've taken on the FAU release's word and followed no further. What I'm confident about is the shape: an institute born from reading a scroll nobody could open is now spending real money to read a script nobody can read, and those are different problems wearing the same coat.

What I'll be watching is whether the recognizer works, and on whose hand. Gabelsberger was standardized, but every writer bent it. Gödel's shorthand is Gödel's — his own abbreviations, private habits, fifty years of drift. The scroll had one enemy, matter, and it was the same enemy for every scroll. A dead literacy is a thousand slightly different dead literacies, one per hand. The instrument that reads the crowd may still stall on the man.
