Werbos comes from the opposite direction (optimization can explain mind) yet that same chapter's own hedge closes on "the soul" and quantum computing — the identical exit ramp Faggin arrives at from the opposite side. Two neural-net-adjacent engineers, one generation apart, both end up reaching for quantum mechanics when the classical/computational account of mind runs out.
