Cold War warhead uranium and hospital radioisotopes compete for the same arms-control verification apparatus
Nuclear-test-ban verification and civilian nuclear medicine turn out to fight over the same faint gas. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty's radionuclide network hunts for xenon-133 as a fingerprint of underground nuclear explosions — but hospitals' own supply chain for cancer and cardiac scans floods the atmosphere with the same isotope.
