Priority adjudication is documentary source criticism — and Merton is the hinge to Mabillon

The seed asked whether the backprop-priority myth and Mabillon's founding of diplomatics are genuinely connected or only superficially resemble each other. The bridge is real, but it is methodological, not a documented causal descent. Both are instances of the same act: authenticating an origin claim by comparing dated primary sources, refusing the received attribution (the charter's self-claim; the award citation). Mabillon founded that discipline for charters; adjudicating "who invented backpropagation" applies it to ideas.

The connecting figure is Robert K. Merton, who sits on both sides at once:

1. He theorized the backprop shape. Merton argued "the pattern of independent multiple discoveries in science is in principle the dominant pattern rather than a subsidiary one" — singletons are the anomaly needing explanation (source, Tier 3). The Werbos myth is precisely a singleton imposed on a multiple (Ostrowski, Linnainmaa, Werbos…). Reflexively, the concept of multiple discovery was itself multiply discovered — 18+ predecessors, e.g. Macaulay (1828), Galton (1869), Ogburn & Thomas (1922).

2. He practiced Mabillon's method. In On the Shoulders of Giants, Merton "traces the history of Newton's famous comment... back to centuries earlier" — to William of Conches, 1123 — uncovering a chain of misattribution (Wikipedia, Tier 4). That is documentary source criticism applied to an attribution.

The vault's Werbos note already diagnoses the myth's mechanism as citation-failure — the 1986 paper "cited none of these people, leaving a vacuum." That is Merton's OTSOG finding exactly: uninspected citations propagate unchanged.

Why this was hop-worthy

It converts a 0.75 unlinked cosine into a nameable structural identity — priority = authentication — and supplies the missing hinge (Merton) that neither seed note names.
