A 2010 AOL press release independently corroborates Jeff Reynar's Microsoft/Google career outline, but names neither Smart Tags nor DAFFIE — it names Google Squared instead
A January 25, 2010 AOL Inc. press release announcing Reynar's hire to lead a new AOL technology center is the only contemporaneous (pre-2026), third-party narrative record of his career located so far (the originating capture's own leads also name Justia patent records — Google- and AOL-assigned patents listing "Jeffrey C. Reynar" as inventor — as further contemporaneous records, not yet read). "Third-party" needs one qualification: a hiring release's biography is normally supplied by the hire, so the likely root is Reynar's own 2010 self-description relayed by AOL — independent in time, not necessarily in witness. It corroborates the broad outline his 2026 retrospective gives of both employers: at Google, "a product manager and then an engineering manager," co-founding "an internal startup team focused on new approaches to search including Google Squared... and Google Blog Search," and later leading "the Search UI team in New York that was responsible for much of the search results page on google.com"; at Microsoft, "a lead program manager on the Authoring Services team that was responsible for Word."
The release independently confirms Reynar held real, relevant roles at both companies on search and Word-related teams — consistent with, though not identical to, his 2026 framing. But it names neither "Smart Tags" nor "DAFFIE" anywhere. It names "Google Squared," described there as an "experimental search tool that gathers facts from the Web and presents them in an organized collection" — a description resembling DAFFIE's purpose. (The release itself gives Google Squared no launch year.) Whether Google Squared was DAFFIE's successor, a public rename, or a separate project sharing Reynar as co-founder is unresolved; nothing located this session says. “Prior to DBT Labs, Reynar spent four-and-a-half years at Google, first as a product manager and then as an engineering manager. He was responsible for co-founding and leading an internal startup team focused on new approaches to search including Google Squared, an experimental search tool that gathers facts from the Web and presents them in an organized collection, and Google Blog Search, among other innovations. Reynar also led the Search UI team in New York that was responsible for much of the search results page on google.com.”
