Corbeel & De Haro: the Hayden–Preskill model recasts an evaporating black hole as an 'information mirror,' with entanglement playing two distinct roles
Corbeel & De Haro's central technical analysis concerns Patrick Hayden and John Preskill's 2007 result ("Black holes as mirrors: quantum information in random subsystems"): treating an "old" black hole — one that has already evaporated past the Page time — as a quantum channel, an outside observer (Bob) who already holds a quantum memory maximally entangled with the black hole can recover a small quantum "diary" thrown in by Alice after only slightly more qubits are radiated than the diary itself contained, much faster than the hole's full evaporation time. This result rests on the central dogma (unitary evolution of the black hole as an ordinary quantum system).
"the QC-model of a black hole is hardly black at all; rather, it may be more accurately regarded as an 'information mirror' (p. 4), that 'returns Alice's information in a time comparable to the time it takes the information to fall into the black hole' (p. 12)."
Corbeel & De Haro identify two distinct roles entanglement plays in this release mechanism: (1) entanglement-protected communication — scrambling encodes the diary redundantly across the black hole's degrees of freedom, protecting it like a quantum error-correcting code against the "erasure" of whichever qubits stay behind the horizon; and (2) entanglement-assisted communication — Bob's pre-existing entanglement with the black hole, built up from previously collected Hawking radiation, is consumed as a resource that makes fast recovery possible at all. This directly answers the paper's framing question — how quantum information theory changes the black-hole-information debate — not by resolving the underlying unitarity question, but by giving a precise answer to when and by what mechanism information already assumed to survive becomes recoverable.
Independent corroboration (2026-10-22). A direct read of Hayden & Preskill's own 2007 paper confirms, in the primary's own words, the "information mirror" framing this note originally sourced only to Corbeel & De Haro's restatement: "the (maximally entangled) black hole is hardly black at all — it is a quantum information mirror that returns to Bob the information Alice deposited almost as quickly as possible!" The paper's own closing section separately confirms the exact "delicious irony" phrase Corbeel & De Haro's review quotes: "In fact there is a delicious irony at the core of our analysis" — referring to the fact that modeling black hole dynamics as a random unitary, meant to maximize concealment, simultaneously makes the black hole a near-optimal quantum error-correcting encoder. This is a second, independent root for the claim (Tier 1, different venue, 19 years prior to the review) — it does not discharge the Corbeel & De Haro single-source cap (Hayden & Preskill is the paper the review summarizes, not a third party assessing the review), but it does mean the mechanism itself no longer rests only on the review's say-so.
