Lakoff traces his political-framing work to Fillmore's frame semantics — not to Kahneman, Tversky, or the psychological framing-effect literature

The question this note descends from carries a premise worth correcting up front: the technical term "frame semantics" is Charles Fillmore's coinage (1976, 1982), not Lakoff & Johnson's. In his own obituary essay for Fillmore, on his own venue, Lakoff states that his framing work descends from Fillmore and treats it as an application of Fillmore's linguistics: "Chuck also inspired the research I have done over many years in applying frame semantics to politics." He traces Fillmore's own influences to "European linguistic research on 'semantic fields' — groups of related words," which Fillmore realized "were also based on organized mental structures of common experiences," together with Fillmore's exposure to slot-and-filler representations at an AI lab.

Kahneman, Tversky, prospect theory, and the term "framing effect" are absent from the piece entirely. This is a first-person, primary-source statement of the genealogy Lakoff claims for his own framing work, and it names a different ancestor — Fillmore, semantic-field linguistics, and early AI — than the psychology tradition.
