The visual programming language Max (Max/MSP) is named in honor of Bell Labs computer-music pioneer Max Mathews

Max (later Max/MSP, now Max/MSP/Jitter), the visual dataflow programming language for music and multimedia, takes its name from Max Mathews, the Bell Labs engineer often called the "Father of Computer Music." Per the Library of Congress National Recording Registry essay, the "MAX software... is a programming language for music and multimedia... named in his honor."

This naming is the hinge that closes the capture's whole loop. Max began as Miller Puckette's "The Patcher" at IRCAM in 1985 and shares its patch-cord dataflow metaphor with LabVIEW, a language built for the unrelated field of instrument test-and-measurement. Because the music language carries Mathews's name, it links directly back to the 1961 "Daisy Bell" demo he helped create — the same demo that became HAL 9000's death song. A tool for wiring up modern computer music is thus named for the man who first made a computer sing.
