In Quintner's 1991 RSI history, Ireland and Bell appear only in a grouped footnote, not named in prose like Lucire — nuancing the secondary 'three main proponents' framing

John Quintner's "The RSI syndrome in historical perspective" (International Disability Studies 1991;13(3):99–104) cites D. C. R. Ireland's "Psychological and physical aspects of occupational arm pain" (The Journal of Hand Surgery 1988;13-8:5–10, ref. 74) and D. S. Bell's "'Repetition strain injury': an iatrogenic epidemic of simulated injury" (Medical Journal of Australia 1989;151:280–284, ref. 75). Both are attached — alongside three further references (Brooks 1986, Morgan 1986, Awerbuch 1987) — to a single footnoted sentence: "The concept of RSI as a psychogenic illness was expanded by Lucire and other authors, all adamant in their denial of an underlying physical injury" (refs 71–75). A search of the full body text for the surnames "Ireland" and "Bell" finds no other occurrence. Unlike Lucire, neither is named, quoted, or individually discussed anywhere in Quintner's running prose.

The distinction matters because a Tier-3 secondary source (Simon L. Strauss, pain-education.com) characterised "Lucire, Ireland and Bell" as the co-equal "main proponents of the psychogenic aetiology of RSI" — a framing this note tests rather than asserts, and one not independently re-fetched. The underlying bibliographic attribution is accurate: the years Strauss gives (Lucire 1986, Ireland 1988, Bell 1989) match Quintner's own reference-list dates exactly. But the trio, named together as equals, is the secondary source's compression of a grouped footnote, not a sentence Quintner wrote. "Quintner named Lucire, Ireland, and Bell" and "Quintner cited Lucire at length and Ireland/Bell in a footnote" support different-strength claims about how central the 1980s psychogenic turn was to any one of those three careers.
