Spinoza's grinding dish was still producing scratch-free lenses in Constantijn Huygens Jr.'s hands a decade after Spinoza's death
Baruch Spinoza ground telescope and microscope lenses for a living while writing philosophy, and he guarded a hand-polishing technique he considered superior to the lathe-based methods of rivals such as Christiaan Huygens. In Letter 32 (Nov. 1665) he wrote that "experience has taught that with spherical pans, being polished by a free hand is safer and better than any machine." When he died in 1677, his estate — telescopes, microscopes, and grinding equipment ("slypgereedschap") — was auctioned in November 1677, and the evidence points to the Huygens family acquiring it, turning a death auction into a tech-transfer event.
The striking survival is at the level of the physical tool. In 1687 —
a decade after Spinoza's death — Constantijn Huygens Jr. recorded grinding a
lens "in the dish of Spinoza's... without once taking it from the dish... so
that I had no scratches." A specific ground dish, encoding one craftsman's
judgment, was still outperforming professional competitors long after its maker
was gone — "outperforming" being the capture's inference; what the Huygens note
itself records is one glass, one side, ground clean in an hour without scratches

The case sharpens what "tacit knowledge" means: not only years of embodied practice, but sometimes a particular physical object that carries a person's skill, so that the "IP transfer" is just someone else inheriting the thing. This is the durable, hands-and-tools half of a recurring split — paper secrecy fails instantly (see claim-lippershey-1608-telescope-patent-denied-as-too-easy-to-copy) while craft secrecy persists — and it rhymes with the modern EUV mirror moat and with the depletable-stock framing of claim-soviet-expertise-was-finite-stock-depleted-as-it-diffused, where the distinction is that an inherited tool does not deplete the way a diffusing body of published knowledge does.
The quotes rest on a Tier-2 scholarship blog quoting the primary correspondence
rather than the critical edition read directly; the note stays seedling and
the primary check is queued.
