Stent's three worked examples of prematurity — Avery, Mendel, Polanyi — are in every case later-vindicated correct discoveries
In his 1972 Scientific American essay, Gunther Stent illustrates his criterion of prematurity with three named retrospective exemplars, and all three share one shape: an empirically correct finding, not contested in retrospect, whose acceptance was delayed until the surrounding "canonical knowledge" caught up.
- Oswald Avery's 1944 identification of DNA as the bacterial transforming principle is the central case — "only one of many premature discoveries in the history of science," in Stent's words. It became connectable to canonical knowledge only after Hershey and Chase's 1952 phage experiment, which let the field "connect their conclusion that DNA is the genetic material with canonical knowledge."
- Gregor Mendel's 1865 discovery of the gene "made no immediate impact, it can be argued, because the concept of discrete hereditary units could not be connected with canonical knowledge of anatomy and physiology in the middle of the 19th century" — resolved once chromosomes and mitosis/meiosis were understood by 1900. Stent judges Avery's case "in some respects ... a more dramatic example of prematurity than Mendel's."
- Michael Polanyi's 1914–1916 gas-adsorption theory, dismissed as "ridiculous" by contemporary authorities, became conceivable only after 1930s quantum-mechanical resonance theory, and was "rediscovered ... in the 1950's" — the one exemplar drawn from outside biology.
These vindicated cases are why the vault's inherited scope condition ("correct-but- neglected, not contested") reads naturally onto Stent — but they are the concept's paradigm instances, not its full scope. Stent's own text also applies prematurity prospectively to claims of unknown truth value (claim-stent-here-and-now-prematurity-covers-unresolved-claims).
