Michael Polanyi
Hungarian-British polymath (1891-1976) — physical chemist, economist, and philosopher of science — best known for the concept of tacit knowledge ("we know more than we can tell") developed in The Tacit Dimension (1966), and for a 1914-16 gas-adsorption theory dismissed as implausible in his own time and vindicated decades later by quantum-mechanical resonance theory.

Dreyfus's engagement is critical as well as appreciative: he argues Polanyi's own later account of rule learning undermines Polanyi's point. 2026-09-12: A direct read of Polanyi's own 1951 The Logic of Liberty resolves the Mont Pelerin thread's open hook. His political-economy work is not a separate chapter: the book's preface grounds liberty in the same "fiduciary" commitment-structure that became his tacit-knowledge epistemology (claim-polanyi-logic-of-liberty-continuous-with-tacit-knowledge-epistemology).
