Michael Polanyi

Hungarian-British polymath (1891-1976) — physical chemist, economist, and philosopher of science — best known for the concept of tacit knowledge ("we know more than we can tell") developed in The Tacit Dimension (1966), and for a 1914-16 gas-adsorption theory dismissed as implausible in his own time and vindicated decades later by quantum-mechanical resonance theory.

• 2026-09-10: A direct read of Dreyfus's 1972 What Computers Can't Do confirms Polanyi is named and quoted twice by name in Chapter 7, cited from two separate works (Personal Knowledge, Knowing and Being) as part of Dreyfus's positive case for embodied skill against symbolic AI — not just a Wikipedia paraphrase. Dreyfus's engagement is critical as well as appreciative: he argues Polanyi's own later account of rule learning undermines Polanyi's point. Separately, Polanyi Society scholars reviewing Dreyfus's 2015 Retrieving Realism (with Charles Taylor) find Polanyi almost entirely uncredited there, complicating any reading of the influence as a durable, career-long touchstone. • 2026-09-12: A direct read of Polanyi's own 1951 The Logic of Liberty resolves the Mont Pelerin thread's open hook. His political-economy work is not a separate chapter: the book's preface grounds liberty in the same "fiduciary" commitment-structure that became his tacit-knowledge epistemology (claim-polanyi-logic-of-liberty-continuous-with-tacit-knowledge-epistemology). • 2026-09-19: An independent-scholarship check sharpened the priority story two ways. The genealogy of his own term: Polanyi's 1941 essay used Wolfgang Köhler's "dynamic order," and the exact phrase "spontaneous order" debuts only in his 1948 essay — so his "1948 priority" is priority for the phrase, not the idea, which he dated to 1941 under borrowed vocabulary (claim-polanyi-1941-used-kohlers-dynamic-order-exact-phrase-debuts-1948). And the priority itself is contested: a peer-reviewed rebuttal argues Wilhelm Röpke printed the phrase in 1937, before Polanyi (claim-bladel-2005-disputes-polanyi-priority-argues-ropke-used-spontaneous-order-1937).

• 2026-09-23 (propagation-repair): the Mont Pelerin clause above was "he was a founding-era participant in the Mont Pelerin Society alongside Pierre F. Goodrich and Karl Popper." Now: a participant alongside Popper, sharing the Society's membership with Goodrich at a date no captured source gives. The source note retracted the "founding-era" wording on 2026-09-10 — neither captured source dates Goodrich's joining, and the roster naming both men is Wikipedia's article on the Society, not the Society's own /about/ page (observation-michael-polanyi-person-bridges-three-vault-clusters-invisible-to-vault-bridge). Popper's own attendance at the 1947 founding meeting, recorded in the 2026-09-12 entry above, is unaffected.

• 2026-10-12: a fifth thread, previously unrecorded: the Nobel Foundation's own nomination archive records Polanyi as "Nominee in 12 nominations" — six Physics (1961, 1968 ×2, 1970, 1973, 1974), six Chemistry (1959, 1960, 1967 ×3, 1973) — plus a nominator role (not nominee) in 1937 and 1947 Chemistry; he never won (claim-michael-polanyi-twelve-nobel-nominations-1959-1974-never-won). This gives him an independent, non-interacting touchpoint with the same Nobel Foundation institutional cluster Carl von Ossietzky anchors elsewhere in this vault — a cosine-0.88 pairing between the two men's observation notes turned out to reflect shared write-up genre, not any documented biographical connection (observation-polanyi-ossietzky-bridges-share-genre-not-object-level-connection).

• 2026-10-31: a proposed reason for his 1948 terminological switch, previously unrecorded: Bladel (2005, p. 24) conjectures Polanyi dropped Köhler's "dynamic order" for "spontaneous order" because he had attended the 1947 Mont Pèlerin founding meeting, where Hayek, Röpke and Mises were already using the phrase — explicitly a suspicion, not a documented mechanism (claim-bladel-2005-conjectures-polanyi-adopted-spontaneous-order-at-1947-mont-pelerin-meeting).
