Watermarks originated as a papermaker's identity mark in Fabriano, Italy, in the 13th century

The watermark began not as a security device but as a maker's mark. In the paper mills of Fabriano, in the Italian Marche, papermakers shaped a design in wire on the mould's surface; where the wire sat, the wet cotton-rag pulp lay slightly thinner, so the finished sheet showed a faint image when held to the light. This let a mill sign its product. Wikipedia's "Watermark" article dates the innovation to 1282, in the same Fabriano paper industry that had built Europe's first water-powered rag-paper mills and introduced gelatin sizing — the material infrastructure that supplied later Italian printing, including Venice's Hebrew presses (Bomberg's Talmud shop).

The mark's function was provenance: it embedded, in the substance of the sheet itself, covert-but-verifiable evidence of where the paper came from — visible only against light, hard to counterfeit, integral to the object rather than printed on top of it. That is the property later exploited when watermarks were turned to anti-counterfeiting (Bank of England banknote paper, 1697) and, much later, borrowed by name to mark machine-generated text (claim-kirchenbauer-2023-green-red-list-llm-watermark). The watermark also belongs to the vault's print-history and document-authentication cluster: it is a physical-media trace of origin, kin to the correction traces of cancel slips and to the material tests that Mabillon's diplomatics would later use to authenticate documents against dated exemplars.

Why this note is seedling and flagged. The historical outline is uncontested, but "1282" is a specific date resting on a Tier-4 encyclopedia entry, and the same capture's paper-mill dates (mill founded 1264/1276) differ from the watermark date — compatible but unsettled.
