Adolphus Greely

US Army officer (1844–1935) who commanded the 1881–84 Lady Franklin Bay Expedition to the Canadian Arctic, survived its catastrophic three-year stranding as one of six ultimate survivors, and was later promoted to brigadier general and made Chief of the Signal Corps.
