Charles Babbage

English mathematician and inventor (1791–1871) whose Difference Engine and unbuilt Analytical Engine designs are foundational to the history of mechanical computation. Matters to this vault because W. Stanley Jevons's own 1870 paper explicitly frames the Logic Piano as extending Babbage's arithmetic mechanization into logic: "It was reserved for the profound genius of Mr. Babbage to make the greatest advance in mechanical calculation... I venture to look upon the logical machine which I am about to describe as equally a result [of the same spirit of mechanization]." That primary-source line connects the arithmetic and logic branches of 19th-century mechanical computing — two threads this vault otherwise tracks separately under claim-inference-classic-ai-engines — through Jevons's own stated intellectual debt.
