Eric Hobsbawm

Historian; co-editor with Terence Ranger of The Invention of Tradition (Cambridge University Press, 1983), whose introduction names the "invented tradition" — a ceremonial or institutional continuity with the past that is "largely factitious." It is the closest pre-existing academic term to the vault's deep-lineage-myth-correction pattern, but the vault's use deliberately keeps the two apart: Hobsbawm's term targets fabricated ritual and legitimation, the vault's cluster targets misattributed technical and intellectual credit.
