Herbert Austin Aikins

Professor of philosophy and author of The Principles of Logic (New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1902, 514pp), a logic textbook that includes a chapter, "Paronymous terms," on words that "appear to correspond in meaning but really do not."

He matters to this vault as the person Edward L. Thorndike's own 1904 primary text names as the source of the "jingle" fallacy — "we are misled by what Professor Aikins has called the 'jingle' fallacy" — making Aikins, not Thorndike, the credited originator of a term the vault treats as a load-bearing diagnostic for embedding-retrieval false friends (see entity-jingle-fallacy). Despite being named in that coining sentence since the hub's creation, Aikins had no vault presence until this correction surfaced him.

• 2026-09-28 (propagation-repair): The 2026-09-26 line above stated the word's location as "exactly one place, Chapter XVIII (p.194)"; corrected to "one contiguous passage, Chapter XVIII (pp.193–195, seven occurrences)," with p.194 the page of the naming sentence. Propagates the 2026-09-27 cross-model correction to claim-aikins-1902-full-text-read-finds-jingle-in-exactly-one-location-index-corroborated, whose mechanical sweep of the capture-time OCR found seven running-text occurrences (pp.193, 194, 195) plus the index entry, not one. The absence-elsewhere half of the finding is unaffected — it is now mechanically corroborated.
• 2026-09-30: A read of Aikins's own syllogism-rule chapters (Ch. X–XVII, pp.121–192, distinct from Ch. XVIII where the jingle material lives) finds the jingle fallacy is only the smaller of two engagements with Jevons's rule tradition. Aikins's own Preface (p.iv) states a program of omitting "the traditional rules of the syllogism" in favor of stated "principles," and two chapters (Ch. XI on conversion, Ch. XVI on the syllogism proper) quote Jevons's stated rules verbatim, by name and page, before arguing against rule-following as such — independent of, and prior to, the jingle-fallacy chapter. • 2026-10-11: Despite eighteen separate page-references to Jevons across the whole book (his own index), Aikins's index and captured text contain no occurrence of "Machine," "Piano," or "Mechanical" tied to Jevons's logic machine — an absence across the captured text, not just an index gap. "Boole" is not among the confirmed absences: it occurs once in the captured text (an unrelated list of logicians on exclusive disjunction), and a "Boole" index headword cannot be confirmed absent because the capture lost the index's A–B column, as it also lost pp. 462–484 and garbled pp. 441–459 (see claim-aikins-1902-index-and-full-text-omit-machine-boole-piano-mechanical).
