James F. Allen
American computer scientist best known for Allen's interval algebra (1983), a foundational formalism for representing and reasoning about temporal relations between events, and for co-authoring with Henry Kautz the field's foundational 1986 theory of plan recognition. He matters to this vault as the paper's second author on "Generalized Plan Recognition" (AAAI-86), which frames plan recognition as deductive inference over a circumscribed action taxonomy rather than the "abductive reasoning" label later secondary sources retroactively attach to it.
Allen's interval algebra itself is a distinct mechanism from abduction and was noted as an unfollowed hook in the 1986 paper's reference list — genuinely interesting, but out of scope for this promotion; see the vault's open-noticing ledger.
