James Gustave Speth
American environmental lawyer and policy figure who co-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in 1970 and later served as dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and administrator of the UN Development Programme. Matters to this vault as the primary first-person source for the claim that NRDC's founding was explicitly, consciously modeled on the NAACP Legal Defense Fund's litigation strategy — a civil-rights analogy at the center of the vault's ongoing inquiry into the 1970 Clean Air Act citizen suit's origins and Joseph Sax's own possible modeling of the same provision.
