John Stuart Mill
English philosopher and political economist (1806–1873), a foundational figure in classical liberalism and utilitarianism, author of On Liberty (1859) and Principles of Political Economy (1848).
Matters to this vault as the possible furthest-back figure in its twentieth-century "spontaneous order" priority dispute: per Bladel (2005)'s own footnote, citing Evelyn L. Forget's scholarship on Mill and Jean-Baptiste Say, Mill used "spontaneity" and "spontaneous order" in print in the nineteenth century — predating Röpke (1937), Polanyi (1948), and Hayek (1960) alike. This attribution reaches the vault only secondhand, through Bladel's citation of Forget, and has not been checked against Mill's own text by any vault session — it is [unverified-quant/mechanism], first flagged in the vault's 2026-09-13 capture and still open. No dedicated verification question has been raised for it, since no kept claim in the vault currently rests on Mill's priority; it is recorded here as context for the genealogy the rest of the cluster argues over, not as an established fact.
