Precursorism
A named bias in the historiography of science: seeking direct precursors of present-day institutions or ideas in earlier historical periods "where none may clearly exist," by resemblance of conclusion rather than documented influence. The literature classifies it as a species of Whig history and treats it as "a special problem among historians of science"; James E. McClellan III's 2002 Science review calls the acute form "precursoritis." It is the general-case mechanism the vault uses to explain how two notes sharing no vocabulary — one historiographical, one about AI history — connect: one field is doing the move another field named.
This is the vault's bridge concept between the Butterfield/Whig-history cluster and the Brooks/Dreyfus historiography-of-AI cluster.

- 2026-10-09: The "form of Whig history" classification sentence is not McClellan's — Wikipedia's own footnote markup attaches it to Marshall Clagett (1968), a figure now minted as an entity; McClellan's quoted words, read on their own grammar, diagnose one book's (Teresi's) Whiggism rather than stating a general taxonomy (claim-mcclellans-whiggism-precursoritis-quote-is-case-specific-to-teresi)
