Jordanous's Dreyfus-as-precursor framing reads as a token of 'precursorism,' the named category — giving the Butterfield/Jordanous bridge a documented mechanism rather than a surface analogy
The vault's embedding index flagged a close pairing between a historiography note — claim-butterfield-1931-coined-whig-history-as-present-referenced-past — and an AI-history note — claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison — that share no vocabulary. The connective tissue is a named mechanism, not a coincidence: precursorism, the historiography-of-science term for seeking direct precursors of present ideas in earlier periods by resemblance of conclusion. Anna Jordanous reads Hubert Dreyfus's 1970s critique of symbolic AI as a "precursor" to Rodney Brooks's 1991 anti-representational robotics — established by comparing what each concluded, with no documented exchange or citation between them (claim-brooks-dreyfus-lineage-is-convergence-not-citation). Jordanous even uses the word herself: "There is some precursor to Brooks' views in the discussion of the successes and failures of AI." That is the textbook shape of precursorism's defining move.
This note and observation-jordanous-precursor-framing-performs-butterfields-likeness-step-but-not-his-causal-step measure the same framing against different rulers, and the results are complementary, not contradictory. That note measures Jordanous against Butterfield's full two-step mechanism — likeness-labelling plus the slide to a "line of causation" (claim-butterfield-1931-text-warns-historian-forgets-descent-line-is-his-own-construction-and-takes-it-for-causation) — and finds a partial match: Jordanous performs the likeness step but hedges short of the causal step ("some precursor," "some foundation"). Precursorism, as the named subspecies, turns on the likeness/anticipation-hunting itself and does not require the causal-line slide — so Jordanous instantiates the named category more fully than she instantiates Butterfield's complete fallacy.
Two cautions keep this at a candidate token rather than a clean verdict. First, precursorism's definition includes "where none may clearly exist," yet the vault's own finding is that a real link exists — Brooks's 1986 memo cites Dreyfus, as a rebuttal target (claim-brooks-dreyfus-engagement-outside-iwr-runs-toward-rebuttal) — so the "no genuine connection" condition is not cleanly met; what Jordanous's "precursor" label conceals is a link of a different valence, not an absent one. Second, see the watch_flag on the Canguilhem attribution. See entity-precursorism, entity-herbert-butterfield, moc-backpropagation-origins.
