Robert W. Lucky
Bell Labs engineer who invented the automatic adaptive equalizer (1965), a tapped-delay-line filter that set its own tap gains by steepest-descent minimization during a training period — breaking the ~2400 bps "distortion barrier" that intersymbol interference had imposed on voiceband telephone data. The vault treats him as the telecommunications-side node of a multiple-discovery pair with Bernard Widrow: structurally the same family of adjustable transversal filter learned by iterative gradient descent, reached independently and for different ends in the same mid-1960s window. His own paper's four-entry bibliography cites no Widrow-Hoff work; his own first-person account of whether he knew of Widrow's work is not yet in the vault — both of his most promising first-person sources (a 1999 IEEE oral history, a 2006 retrospective essay) are named and findable but remain access-blocked as of 2026-07-22.

- 2026-08-17: Checked directly against his own text, neither the 1965 BSTJ paper nor the introduction of the 1967 paper with Rudin names a 9600 bps figure or any post-equalizer rate — the popular "Lucky's equalizer enabled 9600 bps" claim isn't in his own available papers, and the best-documented account of an actual first commercial 9600 bps product credits Codex Corporation (1971, QAM), not Bell Labs (claim-lucky-1965-1967-papers-do-not-state-9600bps-figure, claim-codex-1971-qam-modem-is-earliest-documented-commercial-9600bps-product).
