Samuel Williams
Computer architecture researcher (UC Berkeley / Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) who, with Andrew Waterman and David Patterson, published "Roofline: An Insightful Visual Performance Model for Multicore Architectures" (2009), originating the roofline model and its central metric, arithmetic (operational) intensity — the ratio of arithmetic operations to bytes moved from memory that determines whether a workload is compute-bound or memory-bound. Matters to this vault as the named originator of the formal framework that governs the vault's entire compute-vs-memory-bound cluster: it is the general theory Google's TPU work applies directly and the LLM decode-is-memory-bound observation silently instantiates as a special case.
