Stuart Bennett
Historian of control engineering at the University of Sheffield, author of "A Brief History of Automatic Control" (IEEE Control Systems Magazine, June 1996).
Matters to this vault as one of two independent control-theory historians (with Frank L. Lewis) whose own account of the field's genealogy roots 1950s–60s optimal control — including Pontryagin's maximum principle, which Bennett credits explicitly as "the generalization of Hamilton's approach to geometric optics" — in Lagrange and Hamilton's 18th/19th-century calculus of variations, not in the Bell Labs frequency-response tradition (Nyquist, Bode) the vault had earlier hypothesized. His account is the vault's load-bearing Tier-2 source for that lineage across multiple bridge-check notes.
