The recurring argument in this cluster is not "Lepsius mattered to the epigraphic squeeze" (he did) and not "the squeeze method is unimportant" (it endures in working epigraphy today). It is that a discipline's internal starting point gets read as a technique's origin — "founding practitioner" quietly hardening into "inventor" — when the record, including the founder's own words, says he was a founding user of a method already a century and a half old in a neighbouring field.

The slippage is small and easy to miss, which is exactly why it is worth a map: no single note carries a dramatic false claim. The myth is assembled from a true historiographical fact (Egyptology's own textbook account of recording technique does start with Lepsius) plus an unexamined implication (that a field's starting point is the method's starting point). Read the notes together and the implication does not survive.

The bridge — the same primary anchors the founding role and refutes the invention

What makes this a map and not a list is that the founder's own 1842 memorandum sits exactly on the seam between the two legs:

Kept adjacent, not folded — the flag's own open question, ruled

The 2026-08-13 flag that seeded this map asked whether the squeeze cluster and the Standard-Alphabet / IPA notation cluster the same person anchors are "two sub-sections of one Lepsius-centered MOC." Ruling this pass: no. A map named for Lepsius would be named for the entity, not the argument (the 2026-07-25 lesson). The squeeze cluster's argument is founding-user-not-inventor; the notation cluster's argument (claim-lepsius-standard-alphabet-failed-to-spread-hard-to-typeset, claim-ipa-descends-from-lepsius-via-ellis-palaeotype-and-sweet-romic) is a notation failed to spread because it was hard to typeset, yet its descendants survived — a technology-adoption argument, not an attribution one.
