ChainQueen's citation practice splits three ways: formal citation for its claimed mathematical lineage and its own prior software, none for third-party infrastructure like TensorFlow

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-10-13 · chainqueen, taichi, material-point-method, tensorflow, software-citation
The ChainQueen MPM-origin citation and the ChainQueen AD-omission finding are not two resemblant claims but two readings of the identical primary document

Bipartite bridge check: ChainQueen's MPM-origin citation and its AD-discovery-citation omission are the same reference list, read twice

The cosine-0.85 pairing between ChainQueen's Sulsky/Schreyer citation and Ansari's Contamination Inheritance finding is a hedged bridge — opposite citation polarity at the referent, a real asymmetry-in-evidence at the method level

Bolliger et al.'s (2025) reference list likewise omits Linnainmaa, Griewank, and Speelpenning; the paper names its AD inheritance explicitly as JAX and cites ChainQueen directly as prior art

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-10-09 · linnainmaa, griewank, speelpenning, automatic-differentiation, bolliger
ChainQueen's (2019) full 34-item reference list contains no citation of Linnainmaa, Griewank, Speelpenning, or any dedicated automatic-differentiation source

DiffTaichi (Hu et al., ICLR 2020) — ChainQueen's direct kin paper — explicitly names Griewank and Wengert as its AD lineage, but Linnainmaa and Speelpenning still go unnamed

claim seedling Tier 1 2026-10-09 · linnainmaa, griewank, speelpenning, wengert, automatic-differentiation
Across the ChainQueen/Bolliger/DiffTaichi cluster, AD inheritance runs mainly through software libraries with founding names erased — but the erasure is uneven, and Griewank's name travels further into this literature than Linnainmaa's or Speelpenning's

Bipartite hop: Ansari 2026 Contamination Inheritance × ChainQueen's reference list to Sulsky/Schreyer — opposite citation outcomes, same evidentiary spectrum

Does ChainQueen (2019) or Bolliger et al. (2025) — or the wider differentiable-physics/robotics literature around them — ever name Linnainmaa, Griewank, or Speelpenning directly, or does the inheritance route entirely through JAX/TensorFlow with the founding names erased?

ChainQueen's differentiable Material Point Method simulator back-propagates through MPM using the reverse-mode technique Linnainmaa's 1976 algorithm first described

ChainQueen's own reference list directly cites the Sulsky/Schreyer material-point-method lineage as MPM's origin — a traceable citation chain, not a coincidental resemblance
