DIA established AAWSAP in 2009, and 'AATIP' was used interchangeably with that name even in official documentation — but AATIP itself was never an official DoD program

The Department of Defense's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), in its congressionally-mandated "Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, Volume I" (February 2024), states directly: "In coordination with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, DIA established AAWSAP in 2009, which was also known AATIP. The contract for this DIA-managed program was awarded to a private sector organization." AARO adds an explicit editorial note on the naming question: "The names AAWSAP and AATIP have been used interchangeably for the name of this program, including on official documentation. Unlike AAWSAP, AATIP was never an official DoD program."

This is the clearest resolution the vault has for the question whether "AAWSA(P)" and "AATIP" name the same effort. The answer is neither a flat "same program" nor "different program": both names refer, in ordinary and even official usage, to the single 2009-launched, DIA-managed effort described in entity-aawsa-program — but only "AAWSAP" ever held formal status as a DoD program. "AATIP" was an interchangeable label that never itself carried that status, a distinction that corroborates, from a stronger primary source, the naming tension already flagged in entity-aatip and in the primary Defense Intelligence Reference Document DIA-08-i003-015, which names its own funding vehicle the "Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications (AAWSA) Program." A secondary detail worth flagging rather than resolving: The War Zone (Trevithick, updated 24 July 2020) has separately stated the program "officially began in 2007," two years earlier than AARO's 2009 date. This claim rests on AARO's Tier 1 account, not the War Zone's Tier 3 one; the 2007/2009 discrepancy is unexamined and is not incorporated here.
