CLPW's 'gravitational dressing to an observer's worldline' is a crossed product of a Type III von Neumann algebra with its modular automorphism group, yielding Type II
The specific technical mechanism behind Chandrasekaran, Longo, Penington & Witten's (CLPW, 2023) algebraic description of de Sitter semiclassical gravity: observable algebras in quantum field theory are generically Type III, a classification of von Neumann algebra that admits no trace, no density matrices, and hence no well-defined entropy. CLPW attach these algebras to the worldline of an observer, modelled as an auxiliary quantum clock, by taking the crossed product of the original algebra with the modular automorphism group defined by that clock. Vinck & De Haro state plainly that this operation is what converts the Type III algebra into a Type II algebra — one that does admit a trace, density matrices, and entropy — which is the mathematical move making entropy calculations in de Sitter quantum gravity tractable at all.
This is the mechanism Witten calls "background-independent" and that Vinck & De Haro's whole paper interrogates. Kolchmeyer and Liu (2024) are reported by this paper as showing that once observer–field backreaction is included, the observer's worldline becomes subject to quantum uncertainty beyond the scrambling time, potentially pushing the algebra to Type I — a further wrinkle this claim-note does not independently verify.

“what CLPW call 'gravitationally dressing observables to the worldline of an observer' amounts to taking the crossed product of that algebra with the modular automorphism group defined by the clock of the observer, turning the Type III algebra into a Type II.”
